Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s court has extended Waiswa Mufumbiro’s detention, ordering him to remain in custody until January 6, 2026, as investigations into the alleged incitement of security personnel continue.
Mufumbiro appeared before Magistrate Andrew Katurubuki on Wednesday, seeking a temporary release due to his wife's poor health and his need to care for her. However, the magistrate denied his request, citing that only the trial magistrate has the authority to grant such releases.
As a result, Mufumbiro will remain in custody until January 6, 2026. The 39-year-old opposition candidate from the National Unity Platform is accused of inciting supporters to attack and kill security personnel in Kampala.
He faces two criminal charges, including incitement to commit an offence under Section 21(1) of the Penal Code Act. Prosecutors allege that on September 4, 2025, Mufumbiro incited NUP supporters to engage in violent acts, including murder, against security personnel.
He denied the charges and is also facing charges before the Kawempe Magistrate’s court in connection with an alleged unauthorised military-style parade held at the NUP headquarters in February 2025.
He was first remanded in that case in September 2025 and is scheduled to appear before the Kawempe court next week on December 22 for a ruling on his application for mandatory release.
A total of 12 accused persons, including Edward Ssebuufu and Kivumbi Achileo, are facing charges related to the incident. They are accused of unlawful drilling, conspiracy to commit a felony, and wearing uniforms resembling those of security forces.
Some of the accused are also facing separate robbery-related charges before the Masaka Chief Magistrate’s court. They are accused of robbing mourners and journalists of mobile phones and cash during a funeral last year.
