The Stanbic Black Pirates proved themselves to be a force to be reckoned with in 15s rugby, emerging victorious from the Uganda Cup final over the weekend.

Pirates celebrate win

Their 19-8 triumph over the Platinum Credit Heathens at Namboole stadium marked a historic achievement, as they completed a league and cup double.

It's unusual for the most successful team in Uganda's rugby history to suffer four consecutive losses to one opponent. The Pirates' arch-rivals, the Heathens, are known for their resolve, but this time they were on the receiving end of a convincing defeat.

The Pirates have dominated the Heathens in recent times, and it's possible that this could be a sign of things to come. With three league championships, three Uganda Cups, and two Sevens national championships under their belt, they're well-equipped to take on any challenge.

William Nkore, the Pirates' number 10, is confident in his team's abilities, and he's not afraid to speak his mind. During his physiotherapy session on December 9, 2024, he told his teammates that he would play the final even if it meant playing with a injured leg.

Nkore's dedication to the team was evident in his performance during the final, where he scored 14 points, including four penalties and one conversion. His man-of-the-match award is a testament to his tireless efforts.

Despite their recent success, Pirates coach Marvin Odongo remains focused on building consistency. He's been vocal about the need for the team to avoid being one-time wonders and instead strive for long-term excellence.
